Dick Spotswood will discuss “The 2024 presidential campaign How did we get here and how do we get ourselves out of this bottomless hole”.
Dick Spotswood is the politics and government columnist for The Marin Independent Journal. His IJ columns appear every Sunday and Wednesday.
In politics, Dick is a registered independent and his occasional IJ blog is called “The Militant Centrist.”
He’s a former council member (1980-1992) and three-term Mayor of the City of Mill Valley. He served for ten years (1982-1992) as a Director of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District representing Marin’s eleven cities and towns. In 1992-1993 he was chair of the Doyle Drive Commission and previously a 101 Corridor Committee member. In government, his specialty was transportation.
A San Francisco native (born in 1947), he is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory, the University of San Francisco and its School of Law. Dick, now a retired trial attorney, is the former president of the Rotary Club of Mill Valley, Mountain Play Association, Marin Forum, and College of Marin Foundation.
He’s a member of the Catholic Order of Malta, a director of the Marin History Museum, and a past director Calif. Planning & Conservation League. Dick is chair-emeritus of the San Francisco political salon, The Sacramento Seminar.
Dick and his wife Joanne, both San Francisco natives, have lived in Mill Valley since 1976. They have two adult children and three grandchildren. Beth, a magazine editor, and writer, is a Novato resident. Alex, a San Rafael resident, is an animated television producer for Disney/Lucasfilm.
